How Frequent Are Tornadoes in Argentina?

When we think of tornadoes, our minds often travel to the United States, but Argentina also has its history with these phenomena. Although they are not as common or as intense as those in 'Tornado Alley,' the country records an average of 10 to 15 tornadoes per year, according to data from the National Meteorological Service (SMN). Most are weak or moderate in intensity, but some have left lasting marks, such as the San Justo (Santa Fe) tornado in 1973, classified as F5, the strongest recorded outside North America.

The combination of warm, humid air from the north, cold air from the south, and the terrain of the central region creates ideal conditions for severe storms, especially in spring and summer.

Highest Risk Areas in Argentina

Not all regions have the same likelihood of experiencing a tornado. The risk map is concentrated in the Pampas region and the north of the country.

1. Pampas Plain (Buenos Aires, Córdoba, Santa Fe, and La Pampa provinces)

This is the area with the most activity. The combination of flat terrain and colliding air masses favors the formation of supercells. Cities like Rafaela, San Justo, and Pehuajó have been affected on several occasions.

2. Northeast Argentina (Chaco, Corrientes, Misiones, Entre Ríos)

Extreme heat and humidity from the Atlantic and the Amazon generate violent storms. In 2016, a tornado in Dolores, Buenos Aires, caused significant damage, and the coastal region experiences similar events every few years.

3. Cuyo and the Northwest

Although less frequent, tornadoes have been recorded in Mendoza and Tucumán, usually associated with high-mountain storms that descend into the valleys.

It is important to note that the peak season runs from October to March, with peaks in November and December, when heat and humidity are at their maximum.

How Does a Tornado Form?

A tornado is a violently rotating column of air that is in contact with the ground and a storm cloud. For it to form, three ingredients are needed:

  • Heat and humidity at the surface (unstable air).
  • Wind at altitude that changes direction or speed (wind shear).
  • A front or trigger that lifts the air, such as a cold front or sea breeze.

When these elements combine, supercell storms form, which are the most likely to generate tornadoes.

Action Protocols: What to Do Before, During, and After

Prevention saves lives. Although tornadoes are difficult to predict with precision, the SMN issues alerts and short-term warnings when conditions are favorable. Follow these steps:

Before: Get Prepared

  • Identify a safe place in your home: the basement, an interior room without windows, or a hallway.
  • Have an emergency kit ready with water, flashlight, radio, documents, and medications.
  • Define a family meeting point and a communication plan.

  • Check for injuries and call emergency services (911 or 100).

  • Help neighbors and follow authorities' instructions.
