Permissions: notifications and location

May 21, 2026 13:55

The app asks for two key permissions during onboarding (and on first use of certain screens). If you deny them, several features are limited. Here's what each one does and how to enable them later if you denied them initially.

Notifications (push)

What it does: allows Vigía to send you push notifications when an alert condition is met — imminent frost, hail 5 km away, nearby earthquake, etc.

Without this permission: Vigía keeps working on the server side (it evaluates conditions) but you can't receive the alerts. You'd only see them by manually opening the app. It's like having a fire alarm that doesn't sound.

Re-enable:

  • iOS: System Settings → Notifications → Contingencias → Allow notifications
  • Android: System Settings → Apps → Contingencias → Notifications → Enable

Location

What it does: allows the app to know your current location to show local weather, suggest your main city during onboarding, and trigger proximity alerts if you enter an area with active severe weather.

Without this permission: onboarding asks you to choose your city manually. Alerts still work if you've explicitly configured targets (city / fields), but the app can't "follow" you if you move to a different area.

Permission levels — there are two:

  • "While using the app" (recommended for most) — the app reads GPS only while it's open. No battery drain
  • "Always" (optional) — the app reads GPS in the background. Useful if you want hail alerts while driving, or if you rely heavily on proximity alerts. Uses a bit more battery

Re-enable:

  • iOS: System Settings → Privacy → Location Services → Contingencias → "While Using the App" or "Always"
  • Android: System Settings → Apps → Contingencias → Permissions → Location → While using the app

What about permissions in the WebView?

Contingencias uses a native + WebView hybrid. Permission requests always come from the native OS component (not from an internal browser), so they look and behave like any native app. If you need to check the status, go to your operating system settings, not a menu inside the app.

Best practices

  • If you only use Vigía with defined Fields, notifications + "While using the app" location is enough
  • If you want the dashboard to center on your location while driving or walking, add "Always" location
  • If you're denying notifications because you fear spam — Vigía only sends pushes when a condition you activated is met. No marketing, no newsletters
